208: TPASS LIVE!

Friday! March! The twelfth! Twenty-ten! 7pm Eastern! Midnight GMT! Whatever time that would be in New Zealand! Yes folks, that was the time that the first ever live edition of The Paul And Spike Show was broadcast across 88.5 World FM and Radio Six International, kicking off their celebration of ten years streaming online. And here is that broadcast, warts and all. (newscasts not included)

0:00:00 - And they're off, with what was termed "the most epic top-of-hour theme I've ever heard" by Twitterer @alan_shaw

0:02:15 - Oh dear.... is it going wonky? Could the first live show in the history of TPASS going Pete Tong?

0:05:45 - Yep... going wrong. Greeeaaat. Oh well, there's always drink updates to pass the time whilst the test card plays.

-------

doo dee dee doot doot, de doo dee dee doot doot de doo dee dee...

-------

0:07:22 - I know it's tempting, but don't call. If you are reading this sentence, the contact details don't apply to you. But, if you *really* want to add your tuppence to the subjects at hand, you can send it to The Usual Address, and they'll address it on a future catchup.

0:12:51 - Catchup time - the comments from last week that came in late or that The Boys didn't have time to get to, including a "get comfy" email that leads to a discussion that links baseball, steaks, cruel and unusual punishment and an edict from the health department.

0:18:18 - "Attention, K-Mart shoppers.... bluuuaaaaarrrrgggghhhh!!"

0:26:15 - Whoa, what happened? Pickin' And Grinnin' just sort of.... started. Weird.

0:29:32 - What was the funniest joke in the history of Happy Days? It's not a quizzy (nor is it part of any testys)

0:33:00 - This Week In Stuff: Paul "enjoyed the heck out of" the Sam Rockwell movie "Moon". Spike gets pelters from the peanut gallery for ruining plots. Charming. Paul needs to clear a large section of his calendar so he can watch his Ebert-pick-in-waiting movie "JFK". This leads Spike to completely forget the name of Henry Kissinger. There's been more "Star Trek" on bluray, and some Devo! Oh, and that falsetto band with the hitler moustache Spike was talking about? Sparks. Click here.

0:56:20 - Spike's WIS has been full and rich including a trip to the cinema to see, on purpose, "Alice In Wonderland", more enthralling coverage from the 1974 British general election (no spoilers), and explains why "Boy A" relates to a recent news story.

1:32:42 - Do you wash your car in New Zealand while you listen to The Paul And Spike Show? Send us a picture!

1:33:26 - This week's question: "1 Perfect Piece of Pop"... you have to say what you consider to be a perfect piece of pop music and why. Maybe it's the...

0:00:00 - Paul is still sounding like he's talking into a yogurt pot on a 1940s radio broadcast, recorded on a wax cylinder that has been stored in a jar of warm purple jam. That's been kept in direct sunlight. We got complaints last week, can you tell? Thank Skype for that, it loves to drop the quality of a call when it thinks bandwidth needs to be preserved. The show operates off of $20 bandwidth, what could possibly go wrong? Plus, The Boys update you on next week's live show.

0:08:00 - Ah, that's better. Paul's quality improves, and they catch up on some remaining correspondence from last week.

0:10:38 - Keeping the show relevant by doing what everyone else does, The Boys spend some time, reluctantly, talking about Tiger Woods. Again. Ya-a-a-a-w-w-w-w-w-n-n-n-n! Olympic curling gets a look-in, though. And that's always good.

0:21:15 - Housekeepin' and Grinnin'! The week in current affairs, wrapped in terrible jokes. ...wait a minute! Housekeeping?

0:24:00 - This Week In Stuff! Paul's consumption of the Ebert List continues with "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gone_with_the_wind">Gone With The Wind</a>". Oh fiddle-de-dee, Eshley! He found Pixar's "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Up_%282009_film%29">Up</a>" delightful, and finds guilty pleasure in<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Reacher"> a book by Lee Child</a>. Spike recommends D'Arcy Sarto's "<a href="http://www.thrillingdetective.com/eyes/oxford.html">Lady Don't Fall Backwards</a>"; the book with which someone lit a fag using the last page.

0:48:40 - Spike's keeping it old skoo using the new skoo, and playing "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_%26_Sonic_at_the_Olympic_Winter_Games">Mario And Sonic At The Winter Olympics</a>" on the Wii, and watching multiple DVDs of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_general_election,_February_1974">1974 British general election</a>. Party at Spike's house!!

1:06:45 - This week's question, courtesy of Spike's mum, is 'What would you un-invent?"

-------

Want to contribute to the show? You're always welcome to; email <a href="mailto:theusualaddress@gmail.com">The Usual Address</a>, or follow <a href="http://www.twitter.com/spikester">twitter.com/spikester</a> and/or at <a href="http://www.facebook.com/thespikester">facebook.com/thespikester</a> to find out about or suggest future topics.

-------

Hey, do you have something to promote? Something to get off your chest? Just want to hang out and talk rubbish? Well, if you fancy being a guest on the worldwide radio phenomenon known as The Paul And Spike Show, get in touch via <a href="mailto:theusualaddress@gmail.com">the usual address</a>.

-------

The Paul And Spike Show airs weekly, every Friday night on the mighty <a href="http://www.radiosix.com/">Radio Six International</a>, from 11pm UK time and 6pm US eastern time.
206: Your Three Favourite Acting Performances

0:00:00 - Not only is there talk of lawyers, cheap tequila, taxes and FM morning radio, the show gets legitimised by talk of politics and Tiger Woods.

0:19:51 - Pickin' And Grinnin'; what the week's news looks like from the bottom of a jug of moonshine.

0:22:05 - This Week In Stuff; the section of the show where The Boys share their media week, in order to recommend you toward or warn you away from what they've been indulging in. Paul has been enjoying monster movie Cloverfield and he got to see MIA guest Eve Mauro's threepenny bits in high definition. From the Ebert list, The Passion Of Joan Of Arc, and through perfectly legal means, The Six Million Dollar Man. Spike's got, but not seen, the remastered Metropolis (obtained through perfectly legal means), the restoration of which leads on to a lengthy discussion about whether CGI special effects belong in The Trek, The Wars and The Who. (not *the* Who but... oh, it doesn't matter). He's been recapturing his youth by watching, no joke, "The Multi-Coloured Swap Shop" and ye olde BBC schools program "Science Topics" and was thoroughly entertained by "2012".

1:00:32 - Stiffed by their guest, and not in a good way, The Boys press on regardless and discuss their three favourite acting performances with the commentariat.

-------

Want to contribute to the show?
205: Love, Puke and Childhood Desires

0:00:00 - Love and beer are in the air chez Nez, but only puke is in the air at Paul's. And on the floor. Plus, there's something ghastly in the colander. Stomach flu reigns supreme at Higginbotham Towers this week, and also at Spike's sister's. Interestingly, a previous episode of The Paul And Spike Show was the trigger....

0:11:08 - Google Buzz is here, and The Boys have been buzzing. Are there benefits? Is it the Facebook killer everyone says it is? Or is it just another pointless add-on?

0:24:34 - Pickin' And Grinnin'; Them Boys is takin' a looksee at the news of the week, yuh-huh.

0:27:44 - This Week In Stuff, where The Boys share their media weeks in order to help you make better decisions. Nightbird Paul has watching plenty of stuff, including John Wayne's "Red River"and the not-a-samurai-movie "Le Samouraï", both from the Ebert list. It's actually a gangster movie. Je suis petite Caesar, regarde?? Also watched, but not on the Ebert list, "Downfall" - the world war two movie that spurned a million memes.

0:42:27 - The pollution of the minds of Spike's kids continues, as he shows them the greatest episode of the Nickelodeon classic "Rocko's Modern Life", expresses disappointment over the German TV/distant out-of-focus webcam debut of the newly restored "Metropolis" and keeps it in the neighbourhood with "Earth: The Power Of The Planet". Highlight of the week was "The Chaos/Steam Experiment", Paul does his best to figure out in which order the characters get bumped off in. All things being well (and timezones worked out), actor Eve Mauro may join The Boys next week.

1:08:11 - This week's question comes from @weecuppatea, referencing a BBC article about the results of a study regarding the career goals of kids. So, the nice and simple question on this week's show is... what did you want to be when you grew up? And remember, it's never too late to join in the fun, regardless of when you listen to the show. Send your answers/thoughts/corrections/snarky-ass comments to the usual address.

-------

Want to contribute to the show? You're always welcome to; email The Usual Address, or follow twitter.com/spikester and/or at facebook.com/thespikester to find out about or suggest future topics.

-------

Paul and Spike are as excited as all get out to have Eve Mauro on the show next week.
204: Film Geek / Embarrassing Movies

This week, The Film Geek stops by to say hello, talk about movies and confess how he ditched his wife at some event or other. Charming! Plenty of movies reviewed/commented on, plus the commentariat share their most embarrassing additions to their DVD collections.

0:00:00 Please read this description carefully, as our nouns have changed. Paul has discovered the antidepressant qualities contained in DJ Hero. Mrs Higginbotham... not so much. Wikki wikki wikki wikki!

0:03:44 Rubix cube in hand and wife away, The Boys are joined by blogger The Film Geek for the duration of the show. Plans are hatched for what may be the single greatest retro drink in history. Well, the history of the 1980s at least...

0:11:54 As a time-sensitive legal obligation: "so.. how 'bout that Superbowl? Eh, lads?" Plus, Simon Cowell's hideously poor-taste choice for a Haiti charity single is out-poor-tasted by Paul's.

0:21:06 Iiiiiiit's Pickin' And Grinnin', the only news and current affairs segment to include banjos. (Outside of Tennessee, obviously.)

0:23:42 The Boys and The Film Geek share their Weeks In Stuff, the review/preview segment that helps you make better media choices, either by embracing or rejecting their picks. TFG's been filling up (y'see what I did there?) with "The Tooth Fairy", "Inglorious Bastards" and "The Hurt Locker", and has a million kind words to say about Stanley Tucci's performance in "The Lovely Bones".

0:42:33 Two more Ebert movies crossed off the list for Paul; Spain's upper crust (and possibly a curly-headed bloke called "Médico Que") are destroyed in "The Exterminating Angel" (¡EXTERMINATO! ¡EXTERMINATO!), and "Pickpocket". Also, let down the Bat-Ladder and hand him the shark repellant Bat-spray! On the nightstand, a cheery little tome called "The Road". Aahhh, that'll set you up for the day!

0:55:30 The documentary that Spike can't remember is "The Virtual Revolution", hosted by Dr Aleks Krotoski, otherwise known as "Mrs The Director". Oh, and Pardon Me... have you seen the new NumaNuma-tastic viral video yet? And all the replies? It all comes from Robert Popper's blog.

1:08:04 TFG finally explains how and why he abandoned his wife...

1:09:12 This week's question for The Boys and the commentariat is, naturally, movie themed. What movie in your collection are you most embarrassed by, or that you shouldn't like? Hey, the discussion doesn't have to end at the copyright notice - if you want to submit your embarrassing movies (anonymity honoured on request) then do so at the usual address!

Something to get off your chest? Just want to hang out and talk rubbish? Paul's Ebert list grows ever shorter as he crosses off two more movies; Fritz Lang's "M" and puns abound with "My Darling Clementine". Also, which award-winning guitarist has trouble keeping up with the masters and has been playing the wrong chord on the verse? Paul has the scoop, thanks to rockumentary "It Might Get Loud". Another odd week for Spike with a 'pew pew pew'-filled half hour of the first episode of "Firefly", via a very cool piece of software called Boxee (one X, and no 'babee' at the end), via the miracle of social networking. He was convinced by Terry Pratchett's lecture on assisted death (delivered by a 'stunt Pratchett'), watched more "Torchwood" and "The Rules Of Film Noir".

59:24 Over/Under, where we discuss the things that are over-rated and the things that are under-rated about a particular topic. This week, movie soundtracks. Whether it's the orchestral score or a 'songs from the movie' album, The Boys and the commentariat have some interesting thoughts, including "Titanic", "Nick and Nora's Infinite Soundtrack", "Tron", and two appearances from Paul Williams! Agreements? Disagreements? Let 'em know at the usual address.

-------

Want to contribute to the show?
202: PopBunker.net Roundtable

This week, our heroes are joined by (some of) the cast of popbunker.net, the internets' most pop culturally aware source for news, reviews and previews, commentary, trailers and oddities. Coop (twitter | website), Joey (twitter | website), Caveman (twitter | website) and Heather (twitter | website) drop by to discuss the cult of PopBunker, their week in stuff, and their picks for Over/Under. Why does the opening jingle play twice? um.... don't know, sir.

0:00:00 It sounds like some potential bad news, as Spike sorts out his feelings for Paul. Paul, however, is more concerned about the lack of people using the Paul And Spike Show Google Wave experiment.

0:16:24 Yes! It's back! The week's current affairs, as seen through an oxycontin haze - Pickin' And Grinnin'!

0:18:40 Episode one of "A Very Special PopBunker". Not really. The gang are in, and what a Week In Stuff they've had!

0:30:24 - a simple WIS for birthday boy Caveman, he's been to see religious action movie "The Book Of Eli". *(Mel Gibson not included)

0:32:59 - Joey was blown away the trailer of vampire movie 'Daybreakers'. "But," he says, "like the vampires - the movie sucks." And no... they don't sparkle.

0:34:36 - Los Angeles geek girl comic book fan Heather's week was dominated by being kidnapped and made to read the first edition of "Ex Machina". Once freed, she was also able to enjoy Neil Gaiman's "Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader" and Grant Morrison's "All Star Superman".

0:37:00 - Coop and Mrs Coop have been trying hard to kick their "Merlin" habit, plus Coop's been struggling with the titles of Ian Rankin's "Rebus" series and enjoying Denis Leary's book, only some of which is written in all caps.

0:41:47 - Following the review on last week's show, Paul and Mini-Paul enjoyed "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs", and his Ebert-Of-The-Week was the salacious-sounding "Peeping Tom". Also, thanks to the fine folks at Book View Cafe, "Rocket Boy And The Geek Girls". Really.

0:45:21 - Spike's been overdosing on his comedy namesake Spike Milligan with episodes of "Q9" and "Milligan In...", and shook his head in anguish at the mainstreamocity of the Python-written "No, That's Me Over Here". But what a good idea for improving "Scotland's Winter Wonderland"...

0:51:50 The first Over/Under of the new year is a real head-scratcher. The concave-chested hipsters, the cast of PopBunker and the commentariat discuss their choices for most over-rated and most under-rated TV shows of the 1990s. Some surprising choices for Overs and some long-lost Unders. Thoughts? Agreements? Disagreements? The discussion doesn't have to stop at the copyright notice. Send an email to the usual address if you've got any thorts.

-------

Want to contribute to the show? You're always welcome to; email The Usual Address, or follow twitter.com/spikester and/or at facebook.com/thespikester to find out about or suggest future topics.

-------

Didn't the PopCul... PopBUNKER folks do an awesome job? Hey, if you've got something to promote? Something to get off your chest? Just want to hang out and talk rubbish? Well, if you fancy being a guest on the worldwide radio phenomenon known as The Paul And Spike Show, get in touch via the usual address.

Aaaaaaand they're back. A snatch of Radio Six International's top new
jingle package, a story that's not fit for broadcast, reference to a
turn of the century French artist, and our heroes discuss the last time
they played in the snow, what makes New Year rubbish, and what they did
on their Christmas vacation. Flyyyyy! *honk* Flyyyyyyy! *honk* Flyyyyyyyyyyy! *honk*

0:29:00 For This Festive Season In Stuff, Paul gets tripped up by a ten-hour entry in Ebert's movie list. this final 'Best Of' in this Best-ive Season, Paul And Spike dredge up
more guff from the archives, including a discussions on alien objects,
ghosts, $50,000, and pirates.

01:14
- Paul and Spike have been given an extra hour on their AM talk show,
and so, launch an excessive "pre-game" broadcast to celebrate.

09:05
- Inspired by a ghastly story about a woman who found a human tooth in
her can of soup, The Boys throw the phones wide open and take some
stomach-churning calls from listeners who had similar experiences.

18:56
- It's Halloween, and our heroes discuss the supernatural with an
audience who have been spooked by their own paranormal visitors.

32:36 -
NBC's Dick Ebersol paid a reported fifty grand to charity, in order to
have Carly Simon whisper the name of the subject of "You're So Vain" to
him. Naturally, we the public are still none the wiser, but The Boys
ask their wide and varied legion of fans what question they would pay
fifty thousand dollars to have answered...

46:49
- As was a tradition in the mid "naughties", Osama bin Laden would
release a new year tape, outlining the past twelve months and what his
new year resolutions would be. The Boys play his '04 tape in full,
complete with translation. I wonder if he ever got those sandals
clean...?

52:20 - Long
John Dablinski, NPR's "Ask The Tech Support Pirate", provides some
valuable information about whether the Blackberry or the iPhone is the
better smartphone for syncing with the office.

--------

Spread

The Best Of Paul And Spike - Happy New Year!

Ah, what a year it's been! And instead of palming
off a best-of filled with stuff you can still get, and that's still
fresh in your mind from the past twelve, we've decided to reach into
the archives and palm off some years-old material from The Boys' days
in old fashioned radio. On the slate this week, lottery winner Jack
Whittaker, so-called POW Jessica Lynch, Janet Jackson, a drunk
meteorologist and... tattoos?

01:35 - In 2002, Jack Whittaker
became the largest lottery winner in Powerball history. In 2003, Jack
Whittaker gets robbed of half a million dollars at a local fast food
joint/strip bar. Paul and Spike were there with dissection of the
incident and a local edition of the tv show "Cops"...

26:20 - In 2003, Jessica Lynch
was injured by an Iraqi roadside bomb and - so the US military said -
put a Jack Bauer-style single-handed beatdown on the elite republican
guard, crawled out of the hospital, on fire, with eight orphans under
each arm, cured cancer, de-colorized "Casablanca" and was home in time
for dinner. Paul and Spike were there the day she came back home to
West Virginia, and revealed the niceness of locals who won't be told...

34:57 - The Paul And Spike Show - brought to you by the FlexTech2000!

37:19 - Groundhog Day!
Every February second, some oaf in a daft hat in a place with an odd
name manhandles a rodent out of a box and then claims it's going to be
colder for six more weeks. Go figure. Paul And Spike have their very
own meteorological prognosticator; Drinksalotty Phil - played to
perfection by WKLC's Brian Thompson.

43:46
- It's the day after the great Janet Jackson Superbowl scandal, and the
wound is still raw. The Boys and the callers dissect the preceding
day's events through a "did that really happen?" haze.

50:35
- As the man says, "it's nothing to do with anything". A random
'driveway moment', as The Boys discuss tattoos. It's not a discussion
that will change the world, but it's hella interesting.

--------

Spread

Merry Christmas From Paul And Spike!

Hey all! Two downloads for you on this most Christmas eve-ish of all
days: the first is our audio Christmas card to you, which will arrive
on the feed in the usual way. Paul put this together, and, quite
frankly, it's too damned good to throw in the middle of something.

Click here to download the audio Christmas card mp3.

Second,
is the Christmas music special. iTunes throws a fit if music is on a
podcast, so we're distributing this to you in another way. It won't
download automatically on the feed, so this is the only way to get it.

Click here to download the entire show mp3.

Have

More Of The Best Of Paul And Spike

Merry Christmas! It's another hiatus-filling edition of The Best Of
Paul And Spike, looking back at The Boys' ten year working
relationship, and featuring clips from their award-winning "old
fashioned radio" shows.

01:00 - Funny how, looking back, it
seemed like Arnold Schwarzenegger's gubernatorial run was a punchline,
eh? Well, it happened, and what you'll hear in this segment is Paul,
Spike, and journalist Chris "Mr Universe" Dickerson's treatment of the news of his entry into the race. Oh how we laughed, then gasped, then cried.

16:44 - Veteran news anchor Smack Torquelson grills Schwarzenegger, and asks the questions that need to be asked.*

*(in order to get the film clips to provide relevant answers)

21:04
- The Paul&Spike prognosticatin' microphones wonder exactly what a
Schwarzenegger governorship might sound like. That's not funnee!

23:24 - Exactly why have The Boys been obsessed with Michael MacDonald?
Spike has some ideas, but a clip from the year 2000 that features some
very Michy MacD-sounding coming-back-from-the-commercials music, throws
them into a fit of hilarity.

27:00 - Morning show news anchor Nicky Walters
has moved into a new apartment! Hurrah! Problem is, the previous tenant
left some items behind, including a wrench and a secret stash of
classless porno mags.

37:03 - Leo Laporte is coming to town! Or, at least, was coming to town. Back in the days before TWiT, when he was on TechTV (back in the day when TechTV existed!)
he joined The Boys on the show to talk technology and to figure out if
Paul is a truly geek because he wasn't using Windows XP yet.

46:47 - Another outing for Smack Torquelson and the "Newsmakers". This time, Newsmakers correspondent Rip Tickle gets sent to Duck in North Carolina to get a first-hand (and, ultimately, fatal) look at Hurricane Isabel.

--------

Spread
the word! Now, the best place to get hold of the show is at the new

#136 - Have A Stonking Holi/stmas!

It's the festive season, and The Boys are joined by Two Men And A Ghost for some festive spook hunting, Christmarsery and some shocking cracker jokes.

00:00 With a generic "Happy Holidays" from one, and a Merry "if you take December 25th off, you're observing Christmas, whether you like it or not"
from the other, the final TPASS of the year gets underway. How are The
Boys faring up with the constant onslaught of Christmas music? Paul's
daughter has attached herself to Bing Crosby, Spike whines about the
dilution of the holiday spirit.

11:45 Did you enjoy last week's "Best Of"? Several emailers didn't hear it, but heard
it was phenomenal. The Boys celebrate a working relationship of ten
years, and look forward to next year's guests and more relaxation over
the holiday season whilst they palm off more "Best Of" compilations on
you, the frenzied fanbase.

20:56 Ho Ho Ho, etcetera. No Pickin' And Grinnin' on this, the final show of the year. Instead, some hideously embarrassing Christmas cracker jokes. Paper hats on, this is going to get rough...

25:23 The two men from the Two Men And A Ghost blog, Andrew Wooding and Mike Kazybrid, join The Boys to discuss their Week In Stuff. Andrew's been watching the new Dr Who cartoon, attending two concerts and teaching Paul a new word...

34:13 Mike's had a weird week, he's been enjoying the new Alison Moyet CD and "Terminator 4",
which, he says, leaves the door open for part five; "Terminator: The
Stonking". Also - he teases a boiler man story that might change your
life. What you don't know about this boiler man story could save your
life!

54:02 Paul's love for Frank Zappa has been re-invigorated thanks to a streaming Netflix doco (it is streamed, on whatever it is he streams it on there) about the makings of albums "Apostrophe" and "Over-Nite Sensation". It's Christmas in Higginbotham Towers, with a yearly reading of "A Christmas Carol" and "The Man Who Invented Christmas" by Les Standiford, about how Charles Dickens' novel re-lit the worlds' Christmas spirit.

59:48
Spike's got "Harry Brown" to see, and watched a doco about the making
of "Band Aid". Phil Collins gets some rare praise, and Midge Ure
finally gets recognition for his work.

1:10:45 Yes! It's here! It's finally here! THE BOILERMAN STORY!!
Yeeeaahh! Gather the family around the radio! Guaranteed, you will
never look at a blue bucket in the same way again, nor will you ever
want to eat another breadcake...

1:19:00
Andrew and Mike have gone professional! Thanks to their ghosthunting
activities, they've been invited to official properties to put an
official stamp of approval on important buildings. Read the full story
on the Two Men And A Ghost blog closer to Christmas....

1:44:18 It being the festive season and all The Boys and The Two Men list the festive movies they can't live without.

--------

Spread

The Best Of Paul And Spike

00:00 A brief history of Paul And Spike - after a decade of working
together, Spike picks through the archives from 'old fashioned radio'.

01:43 Radio Six International and Central FM broadcaster, Reid Kerr College lecturer and Sony award-winning
radio genius John Collins used to act as international correspondent
for The Boys' morning show. In this clip from May 2003, they discuss AM
stereo, why Paul's car stereo cut out when he hit the breaks, a dead
political candidate, Amnesty International's opinion of America and -
big news - the start of "Big Brother 3" .....but *is* it the green goblin??

20:51
"The Best Of The Paul And Spike Show" is brought to you by prescription
PedraBack (with a low risk of sexual side effects).

22:20 Competition time!! From October 2002, The Boys are joined by news experts extraordinaire Chris Lawrence and Nicky Walters to play "The Match Game". There's a pizza to be won, and the British slang for undies to be explained.

30:09 Going back to October 2000, a man called Fred Dylan from the local St Albans Culture Club becomes a show meme.

36:20 "The Best Of The Paul And Spike Show" is brought to you by 2004's newest late-night talk show...

38:13 The strange story of local TV news anchor Tom McGee
who gets home confinement following a string of DUI arrests. In
addition to a song from the archives, The Boys take a pathos-heavy and
satirical look at how he was going to spend time at home.

52:08 From January 2003, a very large man points a very large gun at a very frightened foreigner....

55:00 Ah, the heady days of the year 2000 presidential election. The Boys dissect Gore Vs Bush at the town hall debate.

1:00:38
Oh dear, "Biography For Radio" has gone missing, leaving our heroes to
fill the gap with the Internet Movie Database and a kazoo.
Show-stopping hilarity ensues.

1:04:53 West Virginia's governor
Bob Wise has decided not to run for a second term, following an affair
with a state worker. In this episode of their weekly sit-com "Days Of
Our Wise", The Boys reveal what was *really* going on in the Governor's
mansion....

1:13:08 It's amazing what a little rain will do to a
community. It's even more amazing what a little rain's effects on a
community will do to local TV's news departments, who are otherwise
starved of big stories. Local 6's "FLOODAGEDDON 03" coverage goes
overboard with coverage.

1:20:05 Ropey quality, but a
geek-friendly glimpse onto Mars gives one an OCD-friendly glimpse into
the comings, goings and movements of a radio overnight guy, and his
tattling bus driver. All your Mars Rovers are belong to us. That's
whaaa haaaaappened!

--------

Spread the word! Now, the
best place to get hold of the show is at the new www.PaulAndSpike.com -

#135 - What Makes You So Good To Me, Chinky?

00:00 Wow, everything you
ever wanted to know about NOTHING WHATSOEVER. The Boys ignore their
guest for most of the show so that Spike can recount some useless
garbage about something that didn't work. Woo.

10:00
This week's guest is a man who, by his own admission, has nothing to
plug and nothing interesting to say. But he has the dirt on Spike.
Interesting.

19:36 Is
there a way to say "Lady Gaga" and NOT sound ridiculous? Probably not -
but she's gone "gaga" (see what I did there?) over the fact that online
music service Spotify (see also: Pandora) isn't making artists rich.
Incidentally; how do you make Lady Gaga mad? ....Poker face.

24:45 Pickin' And Grinnin', in which the week's news is country fried.

26:41 It's This Week In Stuff,
where The Boys share their media week. Fraser's in-flight entertainment
included the excellent and entirely uncut "Up", but not the edited
seven-minute airline version of "Behind The Green Door". He also managed to bear five whole seconds of "GI Joe", but most of the AHEM-manesque "Cold Souls". He followed a many shows old recommendation of Paul's and picked up Julian Barnes' "Nothing To Be Frightened Of", and his novel "Arthur & George"... problem is, Paul has no recollection of it - there is a chance to check off several squares on "Paul And Spike BingoÂ" though.

36:13 Paul's week has seen some Ebert redemption in 1919's hilariously un-PC "Broken Blossoms"
(also known as - I kid you not - "The Yellow Man And The Girl", adapted
from the story "The Chink And The Child"), and sat in the dark by
himself to watch the provocative 1981 animated movie "Heavy Metal". Ye-e-e-esssss.

40:37 A disappointing and self indulgent week for the sniff-heavy and flu-ridden Spike, with the "Best Of The Left" podcast that seems to take everything that NPR does wrong and emulates it, and a newly discovered podcast called "The Paul And Spike Show". Wait, what? Also, he went to see - voluntarily - "Twilight: New Moon"
and offers two reviews; the film snob review and one from the
perspective of the movie's target audience. Either way, one thing's for
sure - Bella's a bitch.

58:16 This week's question: What was the first poster you hung on your wall? Answers range from cars to stars to itchy arses.

--------

Spread
the word! Now, the best place to get hold of the show is at the new
www.PaulAndSpike.com - with the most recent show, the archives and

#134 - Silken Buttocks, Quincy Jones and Movie Adaptations.

00:00
After a brief schedule update - and a plug for the new PaulAndSpike.com
website, it's right into the fray with all the usual gubbins, including
a sore forehead.

02:24
The Internets - all of them - have been ablaze about Obama's ghastly
middle east mistake. He bowed to a foreign leader, when he was supposed
to have been rude and condescending. Get with the program, Barry
Hussein! Spike reads out some hilarious feedback from an LA Times
article about the breach of protocol. One of them includes the phrase
"silken buttock line" - but not as a compliment.

10:52
Both of The Boys have several orders in for Sarah Palin's new book; one
for the toilet, one for the Kindle, and one to hold up a shaky table
leg. Some AP sharks have been doing "opposition research" and were
shocked... SHOCKED to find that some facts were wrong.

21:44
The New Musical Express have released a list of the "Top Albums Of The
Decade"! See how many (if any) The Boys recognize from the top ten.
(hint: at least one... but not many more.)

26:50
Car parts in the yard, a house on blocks, dogs chained up outside and
the sweet, sweet smell of meth wafting gently across the "trailer
village" as the week's news and current affairs are examined in full
detail via "Pickin' And Grinnin'!"

30:56
"This Week In Stuff", the segment of the show where The Boys share
their media week, in order to help you make better
reading/watching/huffing decisions. And let me tell you, this week's is
HORRENDOUS!! ...no, wait. TREMENDOUS!
Paul has been busy; he got to go outside before the crack of dawn to
watch meteors (sorry ladies, he's taken) and bought an album - legally!
REALLY! - unheard, from so-called Supergroup "Them Crooked Vultures". Two more movies get crossed off the Ebert list: "La Dolce Vita" and "Bonnie and Clyde". Ebert wasn't kind this week, sadly.

41:44 Spike's media week has been less thrilling - he watched "The Execution Of Gary Glitter" and had a fit of hysterics over the Michael Jackson Seance and an episode of The Steve Wilkos Show. Also - Dr Who in high definition? Believe it! ...but was it enough to turn the hardened HD unbeliever over to the sharper side?

55.35
This week sees the release of the new "Twilight" movie. I bet you
didn't know that, did you? Honestly, someone should do some promotion
for it! The Boys discuss where the scales tip between an
over-saturation of Twilight and Harry Potter being annoying, and being
products that are tearing today's teenagers away from their
File-o-Faxes and Dreamcasts and discotheques and making them read books
again.

59:53 Inspired by
the 'Twilight' situation, The Boys and the Paulandspiketeers discuss
the most over-rated movie adaptations and the most under-rated
adaptations, in "Over/Under".

--------

Spread
the word! Now, the best place to get hold of the show is at the new
www.PaulAndSpike.com - with the most recent show, the archives and
various other examples of whatnot.

-------

Want to contribute to the show?
#133: Sesame Scandals, Kurosawa, Death, and Big Yellow Taxi.

A mixed bag this week, as the show
swings wildly from scandal to banjos, from life-changing movies to
life-ending dramas, and from Sticky Fingers to a Big Yellow Taxi:

00:00
Paul is teetering on the edge of his eighteenth nervous breakdown,
thanks to "a Volkswagen-sized hole" in his front yard. Spike, as
always, is just plain boring. The Boys discuss reasons (and methods) of
starting a heroin habit to help them cope and to pass the time. Never
claim that TPASS isn't educational...

08:41
Some great stuff going on in the news; Glenn Beck loses a lawsuit but
gets what he asked for, and Sesame Street is 40 years old and riddled
with scandals.

31:43
What better way to cover the serious topic of international news and
current affairs than to do so with banjos and puns? It's Pickin' And Grinnin', boy howdy.

34:05 This Week In Stuff,
the segment where The Boys share their media week, in order to
recommend/warn you and help you make better decisions. In theory. (I
think they just like talking about themselves, personally...) Paul's
"Ebert Movie Of The Week" is Akira Kurosawa's "Ikiru"; a movie that's not only entertaining, it's LIFE-CHANGING! Something that wasn't life-changing, but was terribly disturbing, was "Pan's Labyrinth"
- not to be confused with the early 1980s David Bowie movie. ...or was
that "The Dark Crystal"? Plus, freebies!! Paul, as you know, is a
resident blogger at Kindleville, and was sent some free e-books from Book View Cafe. Lucky dawg.

53:45 Spike's media week is part remake, part forward-looking: he took in the recent rehashing of "The Taking Of Pelham 123"
(cue jokes about how he had never seen the first hundred and twenty
four of them...) with the express (no pun, etc) intention of making fun
of it on the show, but finds a whole different outcome. He is very much
looking forward to watching two awesome pieces of television. A live
seance by so-called medium Derek Acorah
to try and contact Michael Jackson, and a "what if?" drama set in a
fictional Britain where the death penalty has been re-introduced. Its
first victim... Gary Glitter.

1:10:42
Following on from a conversation The Boys had a few weeks ago, the
topic for discussion is albums. Have ipods and CD changers messed up
the artform of the LP? Is the hard work the artist and producer do
sculpting the perfect running order gone forever thanks to the shuffle
culture? They talk about the last albums that they listened to
end-to-end. Paul fell in love with the Rolling Stones' "Sticky Fingers", and Spike found a new appreciation for Nick Drake's "Five Leaves Left". What's the last album you listened to end to end? Let 'em know at The Usual Address. Furthermore, the fact that frthey paved paradise, put up a parking lot. With a big hotel, a boutique and a swiiiiinngin' hot spooootrd to ignore. Right? Yeah, you bet.

-------

Want to contribute to the show?
#132 - £4m, Dwarves, Rape? and Obama's First Year

00:00 When is this douche ever going to get the show's web addresses right?

02:34
Whoa, has Spike won the lottery? Maybe he has, but a couple in England
scooped a very nice chunk of change, but refuse to move out of their
government subsidised council house. Should they? Furthermore, what
sort of lottery winners would The Boys be? "Bugger it all" or "It ain't
gonna change me, mate"?

14:14
The judge who refused to marry the mixed race couple has resigned, but
claims no blame. They got married anyway, should he have quit his job
over it all?

17:19 Why
are The Boys smarter than the average bear? The Boys discuss a recent
study that suggests curmudgeons out live smiley folks.

19:00 Pickin' And Grinnin', where the week's current affairs are dissected over a tall glass of country music.

21:00
After a brief alco-check, it's on to This Week In Stuff where The Boys
discuss their media week, in order to help you make better
viewing/reading/playing decisions. Paul has finally seen the early 70s
creeptastic Nigel Kneale classic "The Stone Tape". Tropical! In between bouts of "Mario And Sonic At The Winter Olympics" on the DS, he's dropping spoilers of The Wire's season four all over the place, and having a daddy daughter bonding moment over "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" on Blue Ray. Or is it "Dwarves"? Get ready for a gear crunch, as he goes from Snow White to "Drag Me To Hell". Hopefully his daughter was out of the room by the time that one started....

38:15
What a suspiciously porn-centric week Spike's been having. He wants to
put filth into Google Wave, and was thoroughly creeped out by Dan Savage's podcast,
where a feminist caller had trouble dealing with wanting to be...
well... raped. By a rapist. Not really a rapist, but Spike's convinced
she's playing with kinky fire. In another crunching gear change, Spike
has discovered a personal Holy Grail; a genuinely funny comedy show for
kids. It's the BBC's "Sorry, I've Got No Head",
an adult-written and performed hybrid of "The Fast Show" and "Little
Britain". Add in a few lazy, so-called "ironic" racial epithets, and it
would be an adult comedy show!

48:45
It's been a year since America did the unexpected, and elected a
non-white man as President. The Boys (both Obama supporters a year ago)
discuss whether O's first year has been a success or a disappointment,
and whether their initial enthusiasm was unfounded.

-------

Want to contribute to the show?
#131 - Halloween Special, with Two Men And A Ghost

In this Halloween spectacular (yes, I avoided saying "spooktacular" on purpose) The Boys are joined by Two Men And A Ghost.
The Two Men in question, Mike Kazybrid and Andrew Wooding have been
working in comics for over 30 years and have written and drawn
characters such as Spider-Man, Desperate Dan, Transformers, Bananaman,
The Bash Street Kids, The Tick, Count Duckula, Do-Do Man, Savage
Sidney, Shaun the Sheep, and many, many more. Recently, they've turned
their talents to the supernatural, and are searching Sheffield for the
truth about local ghostly legends... that's if they remember their
flashlights, of course.

00:00 Good LORD
above, does the technical torment never stop with these two? More
computer issues? It might be the ghosts that are messing with the Paul
And Spike Show equipment, or - Occam's razor - it might be operator
error.

05:41 Neither of The Boys are going to go and see "This Is It!", the Michael Jackson movie (ee-hee! oohhh!),
but Rush Limbaugh gets fished in by a thesis that turned out to not
have been written by Barack Obama, and refuses to deny it's hoaxeyness,
so there's that to talk about in a slow news week.

14:45 Wait, did we say
"slow news week"? Not bloody likely - there's plenty to talk about, via
the gift of banjos, mandolins and crystal meth, in "Pickin' And Grinnin'!".

17:06 You know that "This Week In Stuff"
is the segment of the show where The Boys disclose their media week in
order to help you make better TV/movie/literature decisions, right?
Well! This week, it's Celebrity This Week In Stuff
as the British comic industry's finest artist slash writer combo Andrew
Wooding and Mike Kazybrid join The Boys. Andrew's looking to the future
and has Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus" and the new season of "The Sarah Jane Adventures" to see. Marvel artist Mike's had a rip-rolling time with the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"
movie, and has a very interesting story about how an ex-Time Bandit
almost became his uncle... Poor Mrs Higginbotham; she's being driven
crazy thanks to Paul's re-discovery of Fleetwood Mac, and he has crossed another Ebert movie off the list; "Gates Of Heaven"
- a documentary about pet cemeteries. Yes, you read that right. As for
Spike, another week listening to South African talk station Talk Radio 702
has provided him with "the greatest piece of radio I have ever heard in
my life". His South African accent's not gotten any better, though.

41:36
Some listener mail poses interesting discussion points: does Morrissey
have "a dark appetite for tofu"? Can "The Wizard Of Oz" get any more
garish? Does "The Nightmare Before Christmas" count as a Halloween
movie, or a Christmas movie? Or both? Has Andrew's Mom ever been
proposed to by Sneezy? And how does one put a record turntable into
shuffle mode?

46:37 You simply won't believe what the Two Men And A Ghost
have found roaming around Sheffield after midnight. Between shining
lights into private residences, muddy trousers and police helicopters,
it's only a matter of time before they end up in jail.

57:00 What are
ghosts? Are they the wandering souls of dead people, are they hidden
recordings, or are they hallucinations conjured up by electrical
energy? The Two Men and The Boys discuss their beliefs, but what do you
think? Let them know at The Usual Address.
1:11:10
It being Halloween and all, The Boys and The Men discuss their picks
for best movie or TV show to get someone in the mood for the spooky
holiday. What did you watch? Email the show and let 'em know.

-------

Want to contribute to the show?
click here to subscribe to the Paul And Spike Show, using iTunes or any feedreader.

Bloody
Nora, the show is all over the place this week! A visit from Spike's
Dad Old Spike throws everything into technical turmoil, and Paul's on
the road in Kansas. Honestly, you let a married man loose to a
conference, and how does he spend his evenings? He chats to two bores
over hotel wi-fi. Oh well. Whatever floateth the boateth.

On
this show this week, all the usual shenanigans including The Boys' week
in stuff, and they discuss what 20th century science fiction visions of

Dez Skinn (former editorial director of Marvel UK and editor of Comics

#127 - No news, patrick Swayze/Benny Hill, and what you miss about the 90s.

A very retrospective show this week. See if you can count the number of
times the phrase "we've spoken about this before" is used. We don't,
however, recommend you make a drinking game out of it. Alcohol
poisoning isn't fun.

00:00 A little housekeeping and a parodical intrusion from Auntie, and we're away...

04:10 Aaaaaaand they're off. A charming (read: dull) anecdote about The Boys' halcyon days in "old fashioned radio" and how they filled a no-news day.

09:10
A touching tribute to room temperature actor Patrick Swayze. What
better way to remember the man's vast cinematic resume, than to compare
him to Benny Hill? ...wait, what?

17:46 Correspondence Catch-Up!
Two letters; one with a late entry for last week's question, and
another admonishing The Boys for insulting a celebrity.

23:50 Pickin' And Grinnin'; if this trailer's a-rockin', do come a-knockin'... for international news!

26:25 This Week In Stuff; the 'public service' section of the show, helping you make better media decisions. This week - hey, Manhattan! Here he iiissssss: Paul caught a Woody Allen movie, and "The Lady Eve",
thanks to his progression through His Royal Highness Roger Ebert's list
of 100 important movies that film fans must see. Also, he's been jammin' to some Clutch. (not "Clutch Cargo".) Spike's had a geek week, reveling in a recently discovered 1979 episode of the legendary kids' show "Tiswas", reading blogs that feature a treasure trove of local tv and ghost hunting, and gets mad that a low-quality interloper is taking The Paul And Spike Show's place in the iTunes top 100 podcasts.

52:17
The big question on Twitter and Facebook this week was: "What - if
anything - do you miss the most about the 1990s?" As always, an
awesomely overwhelming response from the Paul and Spiketeers whose
suggestions ranged from music to movies to youth to hair. Yes - hair.
Big apologies to RynoWV - technical difficulties mean that his message didn't get included. So, we'll print his answer in full here:

RynoWV - miss about the 90's? Sports dynasties. Pistons, 49ers, Braves, Yankees, Bulls, Cowboys. Teams I hated or loved, no middle. sorry for the typical American answer to your 90's question. I also miss seeing Tracey Gold on Growing Pains!

There ya go. If you have a suggestion for a question, an Over/Under or even a response to a previous subject, get in touch via the usual address. We love it.

#126 - with special guest, blogger All Click from allclick.blogspot.com

This week, The Boys are joined by blogger All Click, who says, "Hey, I really enjoyed being on the show. At one point I laughed so hard, beer almost came out my nose. No joke!" Beer nose. Can you get a better recommendation than that?

-------

00:00 But first, a word from our sponsor, wink wink.

02:00
Alright, that's more like it. Off we go, and Paul has taken your advice
and watched a show that a lot of you recommended. But to make room for
something new, something old must be sacrificed, which means Paul has
taken the "which counterproductive fads have you ditched?" quiz.

09:42 The Boys talk about how the podcast being once a week (as opposed to their old three-hour daily AM talk show) means they miss talking about the big stories when they break. Congress' most objectionable member, Joe Wilson (not Frank Zappa, as Spike seems to think) has made his opinion heard. But does it, as former prez Jimmy Carter inkles, suggest an undercurrent of racism? And what causes The South to act as it does...?

23:20
Oh sure, discussing individual news stories in depth is all well and
good, but sometimes what you need is a quick overview of the week's
global news stories. That's what Pickin' And Grinnin' is for, and it does it admirably. With banjos.

25:48 Guest time! Soon-to-be award winning blogger (when we make one up for him) All Click joins The Boys to discuss their weeks in stuff. Fellow emigrant "Clickers" has giving zombies some much-needed what-for in "Resident Evil 5", and he's been digging some late-night Hitchcock action (not a euphemism). Clickers' NetFlix pal Paul (get a room!) knows what he did last summer, and that he's been watching "Be Kind Rewind". Spike's been perving over Kim Basinger's toolbox (both a euphemism and not a euphemism) with the utterly ghastly/hilarious "While She Was Out". Paul, meanwhile, has been reading "A Tale Of Two Cities" and watching a doco about the Manson family. Should we be worried...?

57:20
The big question this week was about video games; the bestest and the
worstest. The replies from the Paul and Spiketeers was, as always,
overwhelmingly awesome and ran the gamut between old systems and new,
popular games and hidden gems. At least one game appeared on one
person's worst list and another person's best, one game acted as a
laxative, and one almost caused a divorce. Thoughts? Additions?
Subtractions? Get in touch at the usual address and let 'em know. To get prior warning of ensuing weeks' subjects, check Spike's Twitter or Facebook out on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

The Paul And Spike Show, Episode #125

It's a great show this week, with award-winning blogger The Film Geek
joining The Boys to talk... well, it would have to be movies. I mean,
I'm sure TFG can hold his own when it comes to other subjects, but he's
the man when it comes to the silver screen. Getting a jump on the
subject of this week's Over/Under segment, The Film Geek has already posted his top five movie bad guys and gals. Eager, ain't he?

00:00
The man's right; there's no time to open the show with a well
thought-out pithy remark, it's right out of the box and into what's
happenin' in the world. Paul's Blue-Ray gets a fourth chance, Spike's
Mr Sniffy McCough-Cold and you'll find out whether The Boys' parents
kept them home from school so they wouldn't hear Obama's school-focused
traitorous decent into evil, evil socialism.

21:43 Pickin' And Grinnin',
the only global newscast that not only covers the stories that matter
to you and have a global impact on the global world internationally,
but also has banjos. ...oh, wait. I've just been informed that there's
a local newscast in Kentucky that has banjos in it. And also,
apparently, "fiddlin'." Bugger.

24:10 It's been a blockbuster
summer of movies, and TFG puts in his ha'porth on the season's
cinematic offerings. Screwball comedy "The Hangover" scores high, but "District 9"
is trounced. Socially-aware Paul and Peter Jackson fan Spike aren't
about to let him away with such slander. If you'd like to review a film
(or films) for The Paul And Spike Show, or just discuss your week in stuff, email the show at the usual address.
And, please, remember: if you're going to watch a movie, remember to
pay full price at your local multiplex, watch all previews and
advertisements, and buy lots of popcorn. Really. Regardless of the
quality of MP4 and divx and how easy it is to obtain entertainment
by... shall we say... less than legal means, nothing
will ever beat the experience of shelling out seven bucks per ticket,
having your seat kicked by a loud-talking, acne-ridden hobbledehoy,
having to listen to one side of a cellphone conversation or being
distracted by the sun-bright glow of a blank text message screen as a
wanker fills in "LOL IM WATCHIN A MOVY WUT U DOIN" as slowly as he can. It doesn't matter how soul destroying the cinema experience has become... watch your entertainment legally.

50:35 Inspired by an emailer, we asked you on The Twitter and The Faces Book for your Over/Under on movie bad guys. And hoo-whee, not only did you respond in droves, it was all excellent! So not only will you hear Paul, Spike and The Film Geek's
most over-rated and under-rated movie bad guys, you'll probably hear
your own. The list included, in no particular order, peeps such as
Heath Ledger, Kevin Spacey, James Earl Jones, John Travolta, Orson
Welles and.... The Wiggles??

There's no doubt that you'll have something to say about the list. And I don't blame you. Send your thoughts to the usual address, and The Boys will mop up any broken glass of your misunderstandings and dissension on next week's show.

.....and Janet Leigh in "Psycho".

-------

Wasn't
The Film Geek an awesome guest? Do you know what? I think you would
sound good on the show. No, I really do. You've got plenty to say (or

The Paul And Spike Show, Episode #124

...in which we ask you about TV that makes you go 'wow!', guests that make you say 'hey!' and things that make you go 'hmmmm'.

00:00 After a brief drinks update and a thoroughly embarrassing Cincinnati Reds faux pas from the foreigner, The Boys discuss their recent forays into the big cities, inspired by Paul's recent trip home to Cincy.

08:49 Last week's guest - Reuben Perdue of WAJR-FM - left fans of the show (we call y'all "Paul And Spiketeers")
hungry for more discussion on Kennedy and on DNA. Some inspired and
interesting thoughts ahoy, which is why we love you and why you're the
bestest audience in the whole wide world EV-AR. If you want to comment
on anything heard on the show - good or bad - let us know at the usual address.

16:54 Pickin' And Grinnin'; the segment of the show that looks at the news through moonshine-tinted glasses, boy howdy.

19:10 This Week In Stuff! Helping you make better media-intake decisions since... um... well, episode one, I suppose. Oh, and they'll also spin THE BIRTHDAY WHEEL!! (not really) Paul's had an interesting week, having gone to see the Reds
lose, and is impressed by his Blue-Ray player and a story about
barbarians disemboweling people. The Boys wonder just how much more
resolution 50 year old movies can have.... Spike's been pouring much
adoration on the iPhone/iPod touch application "Wunder Radio" and has been catching up on podcasts. He hated the hosts of How Stuff Works' "The Coolest Stuff In The World" vodcast with a white-hot passion, but loves NewsTalk.ie's output, pining in the process for Scotland's failed talk radio experiment. In the meantime, TWiT's still not getting much Paul-love, but the Nintendo World Report is. Oh, and can you smell the Radio Shack carpet? That'll be the Sky and Telescope podcast.

46:59 Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion point this week - inspired by a discussion on one of Spike's favourite geeky hangouts,
we asked on Twitter and Facebook, "what was the last TV show you saw

The Paul And Spike Show, episode #123

North Central West Virginia talk show host Rueben Perdue joins The Boys
to put a different spin on the week's news, views and screws.

00:00
The Boys talk literature. BOOM! Intellectualism! Right out of the gate!
This is what they want!! Inspired by an email sent to Old Spike and an
article that made Paul stand and applaud at his computer, the question
is whether true literary criticism exists anymore, or whether critics
are more interested in poking people in the ribs.

10:10
The future is... now? Against all conceivable odds, some frat boys gave
Spike pause for thought. And it wasn't thought about beer bongs, loud
rap music and catcalling at beeotches.

15:03 After painting a pretty picture, The Boys examine the week's news in brief (but not in briefs) in Pickin' and Grinnin'.

17:45 Me me me! Us us US, dag nabbit! This Week In Stuff,
the segment of the show where The Boys warn and/or recommend their
media intake to you. Paul's never-ending quest to recapture his lost
childhood continues, thanks to Spiderman And His Amazing Friends. He's further into the Bask Of The Houndervilles on his beloved Kindle (Paul's a contributing blogger at Kindeville, didntcha know) and Wii-ing the Metroid Prime Trilogy. Spike wrote a blog post
about the only two tennis games worth playing over the course of twenty
years, and is thiiiiis close to winning Wimbledon. He's also reading a
book that outlines the science of a really bad day... There's some dodgy audio towards the end of the segment thanks to Skype going a bit doo-lally, so don't adjust your sets.

31:50 And in comes WAJR-FM talk show host Reuben Perdue,
ice tea in hand, to act as counterbalance to the past couple of weeks'
conversation. Spike appeared on Reuben's show to talk about health care
and Lockerbie - you can listen to it in full here
- Reuben comes on to expand on the release of the Lockerbie bomber, his
views on national insurance and nationalised healthcare in America, his
choice of Catwoman and why he's not going to talk about the death of
Ted Kennedy. You can listen to Reuben's award-winning talk show every
weekday by clicking "listen live Clarksburg" on WAJR.com every weekday from 9am-10pm US eastern (2pm-3pm UK time).

-------

The Paul And Spike Show airs weekly, every Friday night on the mighty Radio Six International, from 11pm UK time and 6pm US eastern time.
The Paul And Spike Show, episode 122

A deluge of awesome correspondence regarding the health care debate last week

00:00
Oh great - that's not a good way to start the show; Paul spilled
something on Spike's sweater. Some good news regarding Old Spike, the
end of Paul's ladies' problems and the reason his mom said "OMG". Paul is half of an intellectual, and Spike shares something embarrassing about prostitutes.

07:03
Drinkie Update! Spike's dry (but drunk), and Paul is making up for lost
time. The Boys discuss their drunk benchmarks. What are yours? How do
you know you've passed the threshold and that you're drunk? Email the
show at the usual address and let 'em know.

15:45 After what we in the media call "a tease", it's time for Pickin' And Grinnin'; a wry, meth-tinged look at the week in news. From a trailer. With engine parts in the yard.

17:45 No theme song here, but The Boys have had an intriguing This Week In Stuff. Paul's halfway through "The Catcher In The Rye", and he's been plugging away at the DSi's flickbook-tastic Flip Note Studio, and he's been playing The Dark Spire and Grand Theft Auto Chinatown (doo-dah, doo-dah). Should we be worried? Spike's turned his critical ear towards Big Finish's Dr Who "adventures", and a mystery benefactor sent him something very cool.

38:27
All hail the intelligent, literate and experienced listeners to The
Paul And Spike Show! Good for you! As we requested, a full in-box, stuffed
with smarts about last week's health care debate! The Boys expand on HD
tellys, on armed protesters and the second amendment, and emotions run
rampant about the health care systems of three different countries.
Want to talk about it further? Got a correction, argument or counter
thought? Email it to the usual address!

-------

The Paul And Spike Show airs weekly, every Friday night on the mighty Radio Six International, from 11pm UK time and 6pm US eastern time.
Hello Cleveland!

00:00 Bloody nora! What a crappy week! Spike's had no sleep, and Paul can't drink because of ladies problems.
Misty water colored memories of the way they were, with echos of John
McCain and Ted Kennedy flowing round their heads, The Boys talk about
their days in "old fashioned radio" and the morning schedule nazi on
urban station "The Bee". Oh... sorry... "The Bizzee".

08:26
Listener Chimp has the in-box stacked, with thoughts that range from
Superman to The Tube to not helping his mum with shopping.

19:16
Some spam leads to a discussion about - of all things - gun control and
whether Charlton Heston was a good or bad representative for the NRA,
you damn dirty apes. Also, they are winner of one million dollars. So,
there's that.

27:35 You'll take my banjo when you pry it from my COLD DEAD HANNNNNDSAH!! Pickin' And Grinnin'; takin' a moonshine-flavored look at the week's news.

30:00 This Week In Stuff, in which The Boys talk about what's been on their tv/radio/library radars to help you make better informed entertainment decisions. Spike's been listening to a doco about people who can't (and won't) connect
to the internet and how their lives are being made more difficult, and
he's had a flip round his in-laws' new HD lineup... and he's not
impressed. Paul is threatening to go postal because of "Catcher In The Rye" and is turning all Walt Disney with his DSi, thanks to a freebie app called 'Flipnote Studio'.

53:12
It's been a rough week, filled with misinformational fwd fwd fwd fwd
emails, town hall meetings filled with loud, interrupting douchebags
who would much rather yell than debate and threats of looming socialism
- all thanks to Obama's new plan to diddle about with America's
healthcare system and turn us into socialists, or kill us. Is the UK's
nationalised healthcare system really
all that bad? Are heart stents thin on the ground and are the people of
Jolly Old England subject to an ominous 'death panel'? The Boys,
offering a (very) unique perspective and with a wealth of experience
inside both systems, talk about the good, the bad and the downright
ridiculous - and they want your views. Tell them where you are in this

The Paul And Spike Show, episode 120

Them good lookin' boys is back, after a fortnights' R and R. (Or maybe
it was a fortnights' D & D, and they're just embarrassed to say...)

00:00
Ahh, there's nothing like the music of a convicted international kiddy
fiddler and porn peddler to herald a happy comeback, is there? I
believe Limbaugh did the same, once. The Boys spend (waste) some time
worrying about the origins of "how old Cary Grant" and "it's only a
movie, Ingrid". Meanwhile, Spike has a stroke.

03:20
Time to sift through the correspondence - Following Old Spike's
statements of hatred for The Society Of Diagonal Walkers, The Boys read
an email from someone who needs a societal name for people who press
elevator buttons when they're already lit, and pedestrians who don't speed up their road-crossing when they see a car coming. Any suggestions? Oh, i just BET you do! send them to the usual address. Also, Robin decypts last week's show, and the boys mourn film director John Hughes.

21:56
Can you even imagine a world where Peter Sissons or Tom Brokaw
delivered the news in their usual stoic fashion.... but with the added
twist of being mashed off their cheezeboxes on meth, wearing dungarees
and a straw hat, missing most of their teeth, and drinking from a giant
jug that says "XXX" on the side? You, my friend, have just entered the
nightmarish world of Pickin' And Grinnin'.

24:32
This Week In Stuff! The section of the show where The Boys discuss what
they've been inta. Paul's been watching Looney Tunes and Flintstones
DVDs; Spike can't stand the Flintstones, so sparks is a-gunna fly. He's
also been amazed at the prognostication skills of Kevin Phillips (bonnnggg) in his snappily titled book, "American Theocracy: The Peril and Politics of Radical Religion, Oil, and Borrowed Money in the 21st Century". Meanwhile, Spike's been geeking out over his DVD of the legendary British music show "The Tube".

50:00 Over/Under this week is about movie sequels. Spike's got some 'splainin to do about his unders. Agree/disagree? Email the usual address and let 'em know.

-----

Next week on the show, Sony award winning broadcaster and the busiest man in Scottish radio John Collins
joins the boys. Do you think you'd be a good guest on the show? Fancy
dropping by for a chat? Email the usual address and let them know. Hey,
you can even plug whatever gubbins you want.

-----

Nothin' could be better than to join The Paul And Spike Show Forums in the... mooo-haw-hawr-niiiing! But really, you should drop by.
The Paul And Spike And Old Spike Show, episode #119

Final Old Spike appearance (until fall) in which The Boys cover a
myriad of subjects. It's all for naught, of course, because all you'll
remember of the show is "Ay Carmella".

00:00
Oh boy, Paul's had a crappy week - and things aren't made much better
by Old Spike's violin impression - his week sounds like three episodes
of a bad sitcom (except nobody got trapped in a refrigerator). You'll be shocked to hear what Old Spike considers to be the "happy days" of parenthood.

03:18 Paul's care package arrived! He refuses to spoil the surprise ending of "Under Milk Wood",
although there is a brief reading of a lost Dylan Thomas poem. Hmm. Oh,
it sounds like dinner arrived! Mmmm! Love those chewing noises and
plate/fork dings!

11:44
whooop! whooop! whooooop! Mail's here! Some top-shelf correspondence
from the Paul And Spike Show's awesome audience this week; one of whom
offers to pay The Boys $20 per "exactly", one of whom has "a wee
haunfae o' thoughts", and there's a couple of FM-style 'shout outs'.
Old Spike gets started on how much he hates the "tricksy camerawork" of
modern documentaries and busts wide open the existence of "The Society
Of Diagonal Walkers" and their affiliation with "The Society Of Sudden
Stoppers (local 137)".

25:10
In a segment that would be hilariously titled "Top Of The Pops" if we
could stand listening to it every week, Old Spike regails The Boys with
a version of the (illegal) Spanish Civil War song "Viva la Quince
Brigada". Good news! Not only can you read the lyrics here, you can hear a version that seems to have different words by clicking here. Different words??? Ay Carmella!

30:22
Do you like your news and current affairs punctuated with banjos,
washboards and moonshine? Then Pickin' And Grinnin' is for you, boy
howdy!

33:07 Wow - Robin's
vast email continues from the last segment, planting seeds for a
riveting conversation about the origins of words. Wait.. "riveting"
means 'dull', doesn't it? It doesn't? Oh.. never mind. There's more
politics ahoy, including more on Arah-Say Alin-Pay, JFK and Johnson.
TPASS is right up to date this week!

47:17
Thrown on a desert island and given The Bible, The Complete Works Of
Shakespeare and a set of encyclopaedias, a la "Desert Island Discs",
what one book would you take? The Boys discuss their choices, but we
want to know what you would take. Email us at the usual address and let us know what, and why.

Now! All together! Viva

-----

There's more fun than you can waggle an Ay Carmella at inside The Paul And Spike Show Forums.
You should come by. People have been asking where you are, and quite
honestly, I'm running of of lies to tell them. So help me out. Come on
over, willya??

-----

The Paul And Spike Show airs weekly, every Friday night on the mighty Radio Six International, from 11pm UK time and 6pm US eastern time.
Episode 118; The Paul And Spike And Old Spike Show

Spike's dad, Old Spike, is in town, bearing gifts for Paul. The three
drunskateers discuss many-a-subject, including a word they can't say,
inter-city relations and Arah-say, Alin-pay.

02:16
BUSTED! Paul hears pouring, so the jig's up for a Booze Update. Old
Spike shares his medicine, but Paul's keeping The Good Stuffâ to
himself. What's the hardest booze that Old Spike's ever imbibed? He
tells the story, which involved extinguishing all cigarettes...

06:10 Old Spike's got some stuff to give to Paul, one part of which is 50% Welsh, one part is a movie that contains an unbroadcastable word and one is a recording which reached ye top fpotte in Cafey Cafem'f Top LX Countedown.

22:43 News and current affairs have never sounded so much like The South. Them boys is Pickin' And Grinnin', yuh-huh.

24:10
A few tasteless jokes and a taste of the Yuengling Light leads into the
bulging postbag from last week's show, including some lovely comments
from the eRepublik people, and another great full-episode commentary from Robin.

28:30
Somehow, probably because of the booze, the subject gets onto how
people perceive the citizens of another country. Yeah... I'm not sure
how that happened either. The Boys talk about the differences between
the folks of big cities and smaller cities, and the time Mrs. Old Spike
brought home a French girl. Ye-e-e-essss.

49:44
The rebuttal to Robin's letter gets the kibosh because Old Spike wants
to read from the US Constitution in a WC Fields voice and from "The
Book Of Lists", which - remarkably - was one of the first ever books of
lists.

56:27 Sir! Trigger's been killed!
As promised at the start of the show, Spike has a two-word trigger that
will set both Paul and Old Spike off. These two words - a name, by the
way - are summed up by Paul via a Fark.com comment regarding people who
don't like "people like us" who make fun of her; "if she would just
shut up and go away, it would take care of them both." Is it feasible
that Old Spike, a life-long lefty, has kind words to say about Bush The
Elder and John McCain?

-----

The Paul And Spike Show Forums are open... you should come by, people have been asking where you are.

-----

The Paul And Spike Show airs weekly, every Friday night on the mighty Radio Six International, from 11pm UK time and 6pm US eastern time.
The Paul And Spike Show, Episode 117

This week, The Boys are joined by the President Of The (e)United States of America, to discuss his legacy. Also on the agenda, why it was a bad week to be a celebrity, Iran's recount and a morbid Over/Under.

00:00
Oh sure, you'd think that after replacing computers to improve the
recording quality (last week's show sounded ghastly), all would be
well, right? Particularly since now there's a Linux
in the mix. But, alas, no. Spike's not alone when it comes to computer
woes, Paul's ISP is having one of its yearly cop-outs. Will Paul the IT
professional be able to convince the script-reliant customer service
rep that he knows the problem is at their end...?

08:58 It's not been a safe week to be a celebrity. The Boys talk about all the dudes what snuffed it,
dish out the Jackson puns and give a touching tribute to that actress
who was in that thing once. On NBC. No... wait... CBS.

14:30
Between Michael Jackson dominating the newscasts and not too many
protesters left out of jail to complain, there's not been much Iran
news over the past week. There's been a recount - but was it fair and accurate? And what links Iran to overnight radio chappies who run out of toilet paper?

18:50 The week's news is condensed and delivered with breath that smells like moonshine and ramps, as The Boys go Pickin' And Grinnin'.

21:30
Hail to the chief, baby! Just a few days before he leaves office,
President Scrabman; leader of the largest country in the New World of
eRepublik, joins The Boys for his first and final interview as elected
head of state. Paul's got a few questions about the game, and President
Scrabman discusses his legacy.

1:05:57 It's been the most fatal week for celebrities in living memory, so The Boys talk about celebrity deaths that were given an Overabundance of media coverage or had an Underwhelming
two-line obit in the Sutton And Thames-Ditton Racing Post. It features
two musicianins, one comedian and someone who didn't really do anything
other than ponce up and down red carpets and sponge off the taxpayers. ** Over/Under is brought to you by AbraCadaver!: don't let your murder investigation go autopsy-turvey - leave your celebrity post mortem to the experts, because your body shouldn't look bad 'cause of death. **

-----

The Paul And Spike Show Forums are open... and HAWT!

-----

The Paul And Spike Show airs weekly, every Friday night on the mighty Radio Six International, from 11pm UK time and 6pm US eastern time.
The Paul And Spike Show, episode #116

Breaking news, which is already well broken. Ropey quality thanks to a
computer that's about to go the way of Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett
and Mark Sanford's political career, this week's show, which deals
extensively with the media coverage of news 'events', was recorded just
as news of Michael Jackson's death was breaking.

00:00
Harking back to their days of 'old fashioned radio', The Boys look back
to other breaking news that has happened whilst they've been on air,
including September 11th and Hitler's invasion of Poland.

03:25
In front of our very eyes, news is breaking at the speed of Tweets,
whether it's a celebrity death or a revolution. But whom can one trust?
Is the media running away with half-baked tips? Will the established
media even survive when every hobbledehoy with a mobile phone and a
Twitter account is a "citizen journalist"?

14:31 Joined by Scottish radio production god Stewart Priest,
"Stoop" talks about the difference in the way breaking news is covered
in the UK from the US media outlets, and the future of news gathering.

33:30
Better late and in a different segment than never, right? Beware those
flying sharp shards of show protocol, the news gets countrified in
Pickin' And Grinnin'.

36:19
Another great running commentary from Robin - glass o'booze in hand and
the lure of an empty Outlook email combined with incendiary comments
from Paul on Sarah Palin means that Robin is in rare form... Also, the President of the eUnited States issues a statement on the boys' eRepublik gameplay.

48:02 Paul is well impressed with the comedic skills of friends-of-friend-of-the-show Rebecca Burch,
regarding the Mark Sanford scandal. The Boys discuss the case in detail
and whether, as a republican, Sanford is getting a raw-er deal from the
media than a democrat.

56:48
This Week In Stuff. Having discovered that it is, indeed, himself that
sucks, Paul scoops the US Open trophy. Work that one out. Spike's been
watching a 1980s-era documentary on the moon, and Paul does the single
greatest Wanda Sykes impression in history. So good it ends the show.

-----

The Paul And Spike Show Forums are open... and we've been waiting for you.
The Paul And Spike Show, episode 115

Uh-oh... not much fun for those non-geeks as the Dynamic Duo talk about
games. Also on the agenda, a healthy dollop of sexchanges, politics,
religion and... haircuts?

00:00
Traps open, and away we go. A booze update; one is drinking, one is
wussing out. Shocking! Furthermore, the hair situation gets worse.
Paul's growing his back, but Spike - following a dare - now looks like
a white supremacist.

07:17
An offer from a listener, who has crowned the show his favourite
non-gay-specific podcast, to be the show's GLBT correspondent! The Boys
discuss the psychological differences between homosexuality and
transgenderism, following Chastity "Chaz" Bono's decision to live as a man. Is a fake victorian-era moustache all that's needed for gender re-assignment?

03:15 Following on from a discussion on the new Paul And Spike Show Forums, Spike circumvents the Iran news to talk about the Sarah Palin Vs David Letterman rent-a-rage incident.

26:57
Pickin' And Grinnin' - hooo-whee! Them cousinbrothers view the week's
news through the bottom of a moonshine glass, boy howdy. Or something.

29:50 This Week In Stuff (stuff stuff stuff)! Paul goes into more detail about his recently finished Star Trek model, and looks forward to building his 'antique' one. Can he keep the hot babes at bay in the Sci-Fi Model Builders' Forum?

44:01 It's a trip to Sore Armsville for Paul following his recent purchase of both "EA Grand Slam Tennis" and "Tiger Woods' Golf" for the Wii, complete with the Motion Plus dongle. Tee-hee... "dongle". Spike's had his backside consistently handed to him internationally through Mario Kart Wii, and discusses the differences between racing other Americans, and racing around the world.

53:15 Spike's new obsession, the "MMO" game eRepublik, in which he will RULE THE WORLD! MWAAHAAHAAHAAA!!
...or not, as the case may be. The Boys discuss how n00b-unfriendly it
is and what could make it more appealing to the head-scratchers.

1:08:47 Time once more for the shopbookexchange.com
Haiku Book Review, in which you could win ten dollars to spend at the
very cool online store. Alls you gots to do is email a book review or

The Paul And Spike And Rebecca Burch Show, Episode 114

This week, the Dynamic Duo are joined by artist, art teacher and art critic Rebecca Burch from the bloggin' shop "Carpe You Some Diem" to talk art, lunatics and "The Safety Dance" video.

00:00 The Boys sift through the week's correspondence, which includes Robin's
weekly stream-of-consciousness rundown of the last show, plus some more
support for "M*A*S*H" and "The Empire Strikes Back" to be inducted into
the Paul And Spike Show Hall Of Fame.
Oooohhh, and does Paul have a not-so-secret admirer? They love getting
your letters, and your Robin-style commentaries of previous shows, so
keep sending them to the usual address.

14:40 When the week's news and pa-paw's moonshine collide: Pickin' And Grinnin'.

16:36 After stealing a neighbour's microphone (really!) Rebecca joins The Boys to discuss their Week In Stuff, whether one should nix a nose-picking family photograph, Paul gives a progress report on his recent model-building ...and will Mr Charley Manson Himself make an appearance? Wooooo!

36:55 With a genuine bona-fide artist in residence, it would be silly not to have an art theme for this week's Over/Under, right? You'll learn the international sound of groping, Thomas 'Kink'-aide gets slandered (not really),
and who drew the chalk outline of Bob Ross on the floor...? Plus, how
you can authenticate a Pollock, a deer in front of a barn in the snow,
and the magical effects of the three-wolf t-shirt.

55:20 Who wins $10 to spend at shopbookexchange.com
following last week's Haiku Book Review? Some alarmingly literate
entries, as always, and Rebecca brings her's to the table. Keep sending
them in, and maybe next week, it could be YOU who is a-winnin' ten
bucks to shop at the internet's premiere used book store, shopbookexchange.com - you know where to send them; the usual address.

-----
Thanks to Rebecca for coming on and being awesome! We think you should all go buy something from the Carpe You Some Diem (damnit) store, and subscribe to her blog, ASAFP.

D'yer think you'd
be a good guest on the show? We think you would. The Boys are aiming
for a summer of guests, so if you'd like to get in on the action, email the show and let 'em know. Whether you have a specialty, something to plug, or you just want to hang out, you're always welcome. Skype's your best option, but we'd also be happy to call you on the phone to join in, too.

-----
The Paul And Spike Show airs weekly, every Friday night on the mighty Radio Six International, from 11pm UK time and 6pm US eastern time.
