Fri, 25 September 2009 00:00 A little housekeeping and a parodical intrusion from Auntie, and we're away... 04:10 Aaaaaaand they're off. A charming (read: dull) anecdote about The Boys' halcyon days in "old fashioned radio" and how they filled a no-news day. 09:10 A touching tribute to room temperature actor Patrick Swayze. What better way to remember the man's vast cinematic resume, than to compare him to Benny Hill? ...wait, what? 17:46 Correspondence Catch-Up! Two letters; one with a late entry for last week's question, and another admonishing The Boys for insulting a celebrity. 23:50 Pickin' And Grinnin'; if this trailer's a-rockin', do come a-knockin'... for international news! 26:25 This Week In Stuff; the 'public service' section of the show, helping you make better media decisions. This week - hey, Manhattan! Here he iiissssss: Paul caught a Woody Allen movie, and "The Lady Eve", thanks to his progression through His Royal Highness Roger Ebert's list of 100 important movies that film fans must see. Also, he's been jammin' to some Clutch. (not "Clutch Cargo".) Spike's had a geek week, reveling in a recently discovered 1979 episode of the legendary kids' show "Tiswas", reading blogs that feature a treasure trove of local tv and ghost hunting, and gets mad that a low-quality interloper is taking The Paul And Spike Show's place in the iTunes top 100 podcasts. 52:17 The big question on Twitter and Facebook this week was: "What - if anything - do you miss the most about the 1990s?" As always, an awesomely overwhelming response from the Paul and Spiketeers whose suggestions ranged from music to movies to youth to hair. Yes - hair. Big apologies to RynoWV - technical difficulties mean that his message didn't get included. So, we'll print his answer in full here: RynoWV - miss about the 90's? Sports dynasties. Pistons, 49ers, Braves, Yankees, Bulls, Cowboys. Teams I hated or loved, no middle. sorry for the typical American answer to your 90's question. I also miss seeing Tracey Gold on Growing Pains! There ya go. If you have a suggestion for a question, an Over/Under or even a response to a previous subject, get in touch via the usual address. Fri, 18 September 2009 This week, The Boys are joined by blogger All Click, who says, "Hey, I really enjoyed being on the show. At one point I laughed so hard, beer almost came out my nose. No joke!" Beer nose. Can you get a better recommendation than that?------- 00:00 But first, a word from our sponsor, wink wink. 02:00 Alright, that's more like it. Off we go, and Paul has taken your advice and watched a show that a lot of you recommended. But to make room for something new, something old must be sacrificed, which means Paul has taken the "which counterproductive fads have you ditched?" quiz. 09:42 The Boys talk about how the podcast being once a week (as opposed to their old three-hour daily AM talk show) means they miss talking about the big stories when they break. Congress' most objectionable member, Joe Wilson (not Frank Zappa, as Spike seems to think) has made his opinion heard. But does it, as former prez Jimmy Carter inkles, suggest an undercurrent of racism? And what causes The South to act as it does...? 23:20 Oh sure, discussing individual news stories in depth is all well and good, but sometimes what you need is a quick overview of the week's global news stories. That's what Pickin' And Grinnin' is for, and it does it admirably. With banjos. 25:48 Guest time! Soon-to-be award winning blogger (when we make one up for him) All Click joins The Boys to discuss their weeks in stuff. Fellow emigrant "Clickers" has giving zombies some much-needed what-for in "Resident Evil 5", and he's been digging some late-night Hitchcock action (not a euphemism). Clickers' NetFlix pal Paul (get a room!) knows what he did last summer, and that he's been watching "Be Kind Rewind". Spike's been perving over Kim Basinger's toolbox (both a euphemism and not a euphemism) with the utterly ghastly/hilarious "While She Was Out". Paul, meanwhile, has been reading "A Tale Of Two Cities" and watching a doco about the Manson family. Should we be worried...? 57:20 The big question this week was about video games; the bestest and the worstest. The replies from the Paul and Spiketeers was, as always, overwhelmingly awesome and ran the gamut between old systems and new, popular games and hidden gems. At least one game appeared on one person's worst list and another person's best, one game acted as a laxative, and one almost caused a divorce. Thoughts? Additions? Subtractions? Get in touch at the usual address and let 'em know. To get prior warning of ensuing weeks' subjects, check Spike's Twitter or Facebook out on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. ------- Thanks again to Clickers for being such an awesome guest. Fri, 11 September 2009 It's a great show this week, with award-winning blogger The Film Geek
joining The Boys to talk... well, it would have to be movies. I mean,
I'm sure TFG can hold his own when it comes to other subjects, but he's
the man when it comes to the silver screen. Getting a jump on the
subject of this week's Over/Under segment, The Film Geek has already posted his top five movie bad guys and gals. Eager, ain't he?00:00 The man's right; there's no time to open the show with a well thought-out pithy remark, it's right out of the box and into what's happenin' in the world. Paul's Blue-Ray gets a fourth chance, Spike's Mr Sniffy McCough-Cold and you'll find out whether The Boys' parents kept them home from school so they wouldn't hear Obama's school-focused traitorous decent into evil, evil socialism. 21:43 Pickin' And Grinnin', the only global newscast that not only covers the stories that matter to you and have a global impact on the global world internationally, but also has banjos. ...oh, wait. I've just been informed that there's a local newscast in Kentucky that has banjos in it. And also, apparently, "fiddlin'." Bugger. 24:10 It's been a blockbuster summer of movies, and TFG puts in his ha'porth on the season's cinematic offerings. Screwball comedy "The Hangover" scores high, but "District 9" is trounced. Socially-aware Paul and Peter Jackson fan Spike aren't about to let him away with such slander. If you'd like to review a film (or films) for The Paul And Spike Show, or just discuss your week in stuff, email the show at the usual address.
And, please, remember: if you're going to watch a movie, remember to
pay full price at your local multiplex, watch all previews and
advertisements, and buy lots of popcorn. Really. Regardless of the
quality of MP4 and divx and how easy it is to obtain entertainment
by... shall we say... less than legal means, nothing
will ever beat the experience of shelling out seven bucks per ticket,
having your seat kicked by a loud-talking, acne-ridden hobbledehoy,
having to listen to one side of a cellphone conversation or being
distracted by the sun-bright glow of a blank text message screen as a
wanker fills in "LOL IM WATCHIN A MOVY WUT U DOIN" as slowly as he can. It doesn't matter how soul destroying the cinema experience has become... watch your entertainment legally.50:35 Inspired by an emailer, we asked you on The Twitter and The Faces Book for your Over/Under on movie bad guys. And hoo-whee, not only did you respond in droves, it was all excellent! So not only will you hear Paul, Spike and The Film Geek's most over-rated and under-rated movie bad guys, you'll probably hear your own. The list included, in no particular order, peeps such as Heath Ledger, Kevin Spacey, James Earl Jones, John Travolta, Orson Welles and.... The Wiggles?? There's no doubt that you'll have something to say about the list. And I don't blame you. Send your thoughts to the usual address, and The Boys will mop up any broken glass of your misunderstandings and dissension on next week's show. .....and Janet Leigh in "Psycho". ------- Wasn't The Film Geek an awesome guest? Do you know what? I think you would sound good on the show. No, I really do. You've got plenty to say (or something to promote) and we'd love to have you on. Fri, 4 September 2009 ...in which we ask you about TV that makes you go 'wow!', guests that make you say 'hey!' and things that make you go 'hmmmm'.00:00 After a brief drinks update and a thoroughly embarrassing Cincinnati Reds faux pas from the foreigner, The Boys discuss their recent forays into the big cities, inspired by Paul's recent trip home to Cincy. 08:49 Last week's guest - Reuben Perdue of WAJR-FM - left fans of the show (we call y'all "Paul And Spiketeers") hungry for more discussion on Kennedy and on DNA. Some inspired and interesting thoughts ahoy, which is why we love you and why you're the bestest audience in the whole wide world EV-AR. If you want to comment on anything heard on the show - good or bad - let us know at the usual address. 16:54 Pickin' And Grinnin'; the segment of the show that looks at the news through moonshine-tinted glasses, boy howdy. 19:10 This Week In Stuff! Helping you make better media-intake decisions since... um... well, episode one, I suppose. Oh, and they'll also spin THE BIRTHDAY WHEEL!! (not really) Paul's had an interesting week, having gone to see the Reds lose, and is impressed by his Blue-Ray player and a story about barbarians disemboweling people. The Boys wonder just how much more resolution 50 year old movies can have.... Spike's been pouring much adoration on the iPhone/iPod touch application "Wunder Radio" and has been catching up on podcasts. He hated the hosts of How Stuff Works' "The Coolest Stuff In The World" vodcast with a white-hot passion, but loves NewsTalk.ie's output, pining in the process for Scotland's failed talk radio experiment. In the meantime, TWiT's still not getting much Paul-love, but the Nintendo World Report is. Oh, and can you smell the Radio Shack carpet? That'll be the Sky and Telescope podcast. 46:59 Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion point this week - inspired by a discussion on one of Spike's favourite geeky hangouts, we asked on Twitter and Facebook, "what was the last TV show you saw that made you say 'wow' - and why?" You responded in your droves, and the results were fascinating! ------- The Paul And Spike Show airs weekly, every Friday night on the mighty Radio Six International, from 11pm UK time and 6pm US eastern time.
